Two babies saved in runaway car scare

Published: September 6, 2003

A NURSERY worker was hailed a hero yesterday after saving two babies from the path of a runaway car.

Brave Kay Thompson leaped into action when the vehicle rolled down a hill after the owner left the handbrake off.

Her two colleagues screamed out a warning as the car rolled down the road, gathering speed.

Quick-thinking nursery nurse Kay managed to steer the children’s buggy out of the way of the car, which mounted a kerb and crashed into railings.

She escaped with only bruising to her shin. Babies Dexter Black and Finlay Davey, both a year old, were unscathed.

Kayhadtaken the children to Queen Street Gardens, in Edinburgh’s New Town, on Thursday morning.

Yesterday, Dexter’s mum, Joanna, 36, from Stockbridge, said: “Had the nursery nurse not put herself between the car and the buggy, they would have been crushed.

“I can’t thank her enough. Had it been anyone who hadn’t thought for the safety of the children, they would have been dead. I think they all deserve a medal.”

Monica Langa, director of Prime Time Nursery where Kay and colleagues Bella Graham and Nichola Swaney work, said: “My staff were stars. The safety of children is paramount and my staff have done me proud.”

A police spokesman said a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
