Topekan thinks flood victim saved her life
Published: September 6, 2003
As the water rose chest-high, Helen Foster was pulled through her car window on the Kansas Turnpike and carried to high ground by a hero Aug 30.
Foster, who lives in Topeka, thinks the man was Albert Larsen, of Fort Worth, Texas. Larsen, 31, subsequently was washed away and lost his life.
Foster, 79, and Larsen were in two of the seven vehicles washed from the turnpike south of Emporia by a flash flood Aug 30.
ìWhen I saw what had happened to me I said, ëPlease, God, help me. I donít know what to do,í î Foster said. ìI couldnít have gotten out the window myself. Someone had to pull me out.î
Now Foster is trying to contact Larsenís widow to offer words of comfort.
ìI just hope we can find her, because I lost my husband suddenly and itís a terrible tragedy. This is terrible for her,î Foster said.
Her husband, Dr. Charles G. Foster, died in 1983.
Her rescuer put Foster into a car with a woman who turned on the carís heater and wrapped her in a blanket.
ìI was drenched and so was he. He shut the door and left,î she said.
She is convinced he headed back into the water to help others. She never saw him again.
