Man reunited with class ring he lost 30 years ago

Published: September 6, 2003

With the help of Arlene SoRelle-Tharpe and her pet boxer Spike, a man has been reunited with a class ring he lost more than 30 years ago.

SoRelle-Tharpe’s husband was in their backyard two years ago when he noticed Spike pawing curiously at something on the ground. It turned out to be a man’s University of Houston class ring embossed with the year “67″ and the degree “BS” and the initials “RJC” inscribed inside.

SoRelle-Tharpe said she became obsessed with finding the owner because the lost ring represented one of his life’s accomplishments.

After beginning her search, stopping and then starting again, she found the owner on Friday: Bob Connor, whose family had owned the home directly behind SoRelle-Tharpe’s.

“I feel so great we found him,” she told the Houston Chronicle for its Saturday editions. “I feel like I’ve accomplished something.”

Connor lost the ring more than 30 years while playing fetch with his dog Spot in his parents’ back yard. He tried finding it, even using a metal detector, but had no luck.

“I gave up on it,” he said of his ring, which he got when he graduated in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

When SoRelle-Tharpe found the ring, she first tried locating the owner through its manufacturer and the university but had no luck, putting the ring away in a drawer. She renewed her efforts and with help from the university’s alumni association, she contacted Connor on Friday.

“I was pretty surprised, because I never thought I’d see it again,” Connor said.
