Hundreds rescued off Waikiki
Published: September 3, 2003
More than 600 swimmers in the Waikiki Rough Water Swim this morning were either rescued or swam to shore early because of strong currents, according to race director Ted Sheppard.
Of 1,055 swimmers who started the 34th annual race, only 358 completed the 2.4 mile race, said Sheppard.
At 10:00 a.m., about an hour into the 34th annual race, Sheppard and others contacted the U.S. Coast Guard and the Honolulu Fire Department for help picking swimmers out of the water.
As of 2:30 p.m., about nine swimmers were unaccounted for but Sheppard and other race officials said those swimmers likely got out of the water and failed to report to race officials.
The race took place as Tropical Storm Jimena, which was downgraded from a hurricane earlier today, was about 130 miles south-southwest of the Big Island and was moving west-southwest, away from the islands, at 17 mph.
