Men rescued after cold night in the Hills
Published: August 30, 2003
Bob Helmberger (54) and Bob Fox (75) had been scouting for deer. As they left for home their pickup quit on them. They continued on foot in the hope to find a ride. When darkness fell and they couldn’t see where they were going anymore they stayed put.
“They did the best thing they could at that point, and that was to stop where they were at before they got hurt,” said Dan Regan, rescue squad leader.
When their families called the sheriff’s office they were able only to indicate a general area in which the two men could be found.
“In talking with relatives to figure out where they might have been scouting, we ended up with a large area to cover,” Wenzel said. “It was pretty much anywhere from the Wyoming line to Highway 85 near Deadwood. That’s a heck of an area to try to cover.”
When the rescue workers spotted the truck they were able to narrow down the search area.
Fox and Helmberger were found uninjured about 5:30 a.m., cold and wet from rainfall.
