Crop-a-Cop for charity
Published: August 30, 2003
Nine years ago Sergeant Karl David came up with the idea of Crop-a-Cop day, now called Bluey Day. The fundraising idea: shave a cop’s head and let the proceeds go to children’s hospitals. Bluey Day is held nationally and involves emergency service personnel as well as police in each state. One thousand dollars is raised for each shaved head.
“Police have always been out there fund-raising,” he said. “I wanted to unite all their efforts and needed a gimmicky idea. When we started, a shaved head was a very anti-social hairstyle and I wanted to change that for the sake of the kids who lose their hair during treatment.”
During the first event 40 cops had their head shaved. The event raised $40,000 (Australian).
Over a 9 year period Bluey Day has raised 15 million Australian dollars.
Last night his efforts were recognised when he received an inaugural Celebrating Melbourne Award for community development at the Melbourne Town Hall.
