Youngster who saved his family is in turn honored by firefighters

Published: August 29, 2003

Last Sunday a minor stove fire spread to the kitchen cabinets in Francisco Gonzalez’s (11) family home. Francisco acted fasted. Het evacuated his grandmother and his nephew from the building, went into the hallway and got the fire extinguisher.

He was unable to calm the flames, so he broke a window with his fist — sustaining a cut that needed stitches — to ventilate the room. He evacuated the building after realizing he could not fight the fire himself, according to Battalion Chief Steve Cavallero.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found light smoke coming from the burning unit. But thanks to Gonzalez, everyone was safe and sound outside, Battalion Chief Steve Krause said.

“It was a very heroic move on his part, being only 11,” Krause said. “He saved his family’s life.”

On Thursday he was honored by the firefighters. In front of his proud family and community members they made him an honorary firefighter.
