Wookie’s second chance

Published: August 29, 2003

Now they call him Wookie, after Chewbacca, a furry character in Star Wars. He weighs 24 kg and has a wonderful fur which makes him instantly recognisable as a Collie; a “Lassie” dog.

But Wookie wasn’t always this way. Before he got to live with Helen Salby and her family he was just a measily ol’ dog.

The dog had been neglected and starved and was so weak it had to lean against a wall to find the energy to urinate. He weighed 14kg and his matted coat had to be shaved off.

Helen and her family always have tended to small dogs, beagles and spaniels, and never considered taking in a large dog like Wookie. But when she read the report on Wookie she went to Dogs’ Refuge Home in Shenton Park to see if she could help.

“He’s a lovely, gentle dog. He naturally herds things - people, chickens, children.

“When we visit our farm he herds the guinea fowl into neat bunches.”

“He’s a dream, a very easy dog,” she said
