Marrow donor gives miracle

Published: August 27, 2003

Ezekiel Kenui (49) happened by chance upon a bone marrow drive. The drive was to benefit a leukemia patient and Ezekiel registered. Unfortunately he wasn’t a match for that patient.

Almost half a year later he was contacted by doctors telling him of a possible match with a patient on Oahu (Hawaii).

“He was chosen as the best possible chance of 5 million donors nationwide,” Hawaii Bone Marrow Registry program coordinator Renee Adaniya said.

He has undergone treatment with the drug filgrastim, a synthetic hormone that stimulates stem cells to move from the bone marrow into the bloodstream.

Donors respond in different ways to the drug, but in general it can cause flulike symptoms

After five of such treatments white blood cells were extracted from his body.

One year from now, if the patient recovers, Kenui will get to exchange information with him. Kenui believes the patient is a man on Oahu in his mid - 20s.
