Donated mobile phones lighten provide relief for the poor

An average old mobile phone is worth US $7.90. Some models do more. Take a Nokia 3310 - with its proceeds you can provide a mosquito net to protect a child from malaria.
Oxfam’s Bring Bring project encourages people to bring in their old, unused handset.
In Jersey, with 1000 handsets turned in, US $3,000 was raised for charity.
Saskya Huggins of Oxfam’s Bring Bring Scheme Co-ordinator said ‘The response of Islanders to Jersey Telecom’s call for old mobiles has been fantastic, helping raise vital funds for Oxfam’s work.
On average each working handset is worth enough to provide clothes to a street child in Ethiopia or four medical kits for midwives in India - so imagine what a difference the money raised from 1,000 phones has made to the lives of some of the world’s poorest people.
It is estimated that in the USA alone 12 million handsets lay unused at home as their owners upgraded to newer models.
