Published: August 26, 2003

Two survivors. Two backgrounds. Two types of press coverage. But definitely two miracles.

Jose Maldonado (31) was taking a sick friend home. Waiting for the subway train he bend over to see if the train was coming when he fell. An oncoming C-train hit him. Four of its cars drove over Jose, breaking an arm and leg, fracturing his spine and battering his head. Doctors cut a hole into Maldonado’s trachea so he could breathe with the help of a respirator. He’s been unconcious for six weeks and has now been moved from Intensive Care to his own room.

“He’s alert,” his wife, Luisa, said yesterday. “He’s wide awake. He hears me. He understands. He tries to talk but he can’t. You have to read his lips.”

Jose lives with his pregnant wife Luisa and their 4 children in a homeless shelter. His miraculous survival got 7 short articles and some hate-mails.

Brandon Crismon (34) was waiting for the subway when he was pushed in front of an oncoming train.

He rolled into a shallow drainage trough between the rails. The train screamed to a halt inches above his head. Crismon survived with cuts and bruises, torn cartilage in one arm and a leg broken in two places.

He shared a room with another survivor….

This man had fallen onto the subway tracks after a mugging, only to have several fingers blown off by the electrified third rail.

Brandon’s story got good coverage countingover 20 articles. Brandon is a financial analyst with a midtown brokerage firm.
