Life-jacket a real life-saver
Published: August 26, 2003
Dan Hooper (43) went for a quiet fishing trip in his boat at Lake Manitoba Narrows (Canada). Instead shortly into the trip the boat’s motor quit. Unable to start the engine he was pushed out onto the lake by a strong Eastern wind.
Large waves engulfed the boat which took on water and sank.
It was almost 19 hours later before he was reported missing by his wife.
Shortly after noon that day, Department of Natural Resources and RCMP officials spotted Hooper on a rock island about two kilometres south of Reed Island on Lake Manitoba.
The RCMP says he owes his survival to his life-jacket.
“It is believed that without the personal flotation device, he would not have survived this ordeal,” said Const. Thompson Blacksmith.
