She gives cancer patients a lift

Published: August 25, 2003

Jackie Kinney (73) is a volunteer for the American Cancer Society since 5 years. After her daughter had been diagnosed with breast cancer she had become to realise how having a lot of friends and family around for support is important.

She handles the Road to Recovery program which aims to help patients who lack transportation.

Many people come to Arizona from out of state for their cancer treatments and lack a car or friends to help them. Although there are other modes of transportation, cancer patients are often too sick after a round of chemotherapy to wait outside for hours at a time for a bus or Dial-a-Ride van.

She matches up volunteer drivers with patients. And if she can’t find a driver she’s known to drive them herself.

” I don’t think she realizes the greatness she brings to our organization,” [Tricia] Bruce [, Cancer Society program coordinator] said.

Kinney herself is impressed with the volunteer drivers.

“There are a lot of good people out there volunteering that nobody knows about,” Kinney said. “We have drivers who will drive three days a week. Their generosity of spirit is enormous.”
