Touched by beating victim’s story, teen donates school money
Published: August 24, 2003
John Atkinson (51) was performing volunteer night-watch duties from his wheelchair at the Conway Housing Authority. A 19 year old kid beat him.
This so touched the hart of Shawn Prince (16) that she decided to donate the $200 she had gotten from her grandmother for school to John. So she and her parents took a card with a note to the hospital where a nurse handed it over. The note said; “Thank you for being a hero. Glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time you fall. God bless you.“.
Mrs. Atkinson said when they received the gift, “We cried.”
The Atkinsons, who each have multiple health problems, struggled financially even before the medical costs started piling up from Atkinson’s recent hospitalization.
Raised in a family that often reaches out to help in the community Shawn doesn’t think the donation is a big deal.
“If one person did something nice every day, even if it’s holding the door for someone - that makes a difference,” Shawn said.
Note: on the way home from dropping off the money she brought some of her clothes to the Women’s Shelter.
