Lung disease cure closer

Published 24 Aug. 2003

Although a lot more work needs to be done cell therapy cures to cystic fibrosis, mesothelioma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and even lung cancer are one important step closer.

Scientists in Melbourne (Australia) have turned human embryonic stem cells into lung cells. This potentially would make it possible for lungs to repair themselves.

The next step will be working on mice.

“It just means that there is an alternative form of therapy perhaps,” Dr Mollard said.

He says the research is especially directed at cystic fibrosis.

“This is the one that we are interested in … we are hoping to be able to get the stem cells to engraft into the lung and replace the tissue in cystic fibrosis in the lung so that it can function normally again,” he said.
