Community service projects leave streams a little cleaner
Published: August 24, 2003
Students and volunteers from several organizations cleaned up from Harveys Creek in Plymouth Township and Boston Creek in Larksville Borough, taking out hundreds of tires.
“Many of the students are new to the area and the community service projects play a vital role in introducing them to the community where they will live,” said Christine Tondrick, university spokeswoman.
More than 500 tires were removed from the streams enabling the Yudichak Family Lighthouse Fund and the Luzerne Foundation to donate an additional $300.
State Rep. John Yudichak said he has participated in the cleanups in the past and is encouraged by the enthusiasm of the Wilkes students.
“Teaming the students and our environmental organizations is a fantastic idea. They get to see firsthand the environmental challenges we have here and they get an appreciation for our environment and community,” he said.
