Community helps family with sick kids

Published: August 24, 2003

Jacob, 6 and Liam, 3, are both battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most serious form of the disease, and people from around the area will not let them fight alone.

This will be the third year that the community organizes a fundraiser to get money to help the family in its battle against the disease. There is no known cure for the disease. In most cases it causes people to lose the ability to walk around the age of 13 - and causes them to die around the age of 20.

“It’s an every day battle,” Melody said. “Some days you are really not happy with the universe, but we believe that all things happen for a reason. What is the saddest misfortune is that some people go through something like this and never learn what the lesson is.”

The couple has donated over $3,000 of their own money to research into the disease. They plan to donate part of the money from the fundraiser during a telethon for Muscular Distrohpy on Labor Day weekend.
