Great idea - easier fun

Go to a park, go to its playground and enjoy the banter and laughter of kids playing. Now look at the sideline. There you see the kids who can’t play. True, they have some disabilities. They might be in a wheelchair or need to use a walker. But they can play - if only the playground would allow them.

In Appleton (USA) the organizers of the Universal Playground Project mean to chance that. They want to build a playground in Memorial Park which allows everyone to play. And they don’t want to stop taking responsibility just there.

On Wednesday, project organizers presented Appleton city officials with $20,000 to be used to set up an endowment fund for playground maintenance.

The playground is designed with everyone in mind.

A rubberized surface will allow wheelchairs, walkers or other devices onto the play area. There are ramps, accessible units that allow wheelchairs and walkers, and special equipment such as a sway swing, which can rock a wheelchair back and forth.

To build it they need about 400 volunteers. That would save $20,000.

“Some people have agreed to work multiple shifts in a day and multiple days,” she said.

The organizers are confident they’ll find enough people to participate in the project.
