Citizens volunteer - Bad boys beware

Published: August 22, 2003

The Citizens on Patrol Services (COPS) is a national nonprofit organization. Volunteers have a background check done on them, receive basic training but aren’t allowed to carry weapons or handcuffs. Never the less; bad boys beware.

“Our job is to act as the eyes and ears of the police department. Our job is to look for certain things that are identified as problems. Then we back away and let the sheriff’s department do its job.”

Watching out for people’s houses while they’re gone, doing traffic control when something has gone down. Helping with the paperwork. Common tasks for COPS volunteers - and highyl appreciated.

“The people in this program are a valuable resource,” said Cathedral City Police Department Lt. Al Reshaw. “They all volunteer and they take care of jobs both in the office and out on the streets.”

Putting more “blue on the street”, making the public feel secure in the knowledge the police is out there by having uniformed officers visible, certainly gets a push in the back with this program.

On duty, members wear uniforms that are different from those worn by regular officers. In two-person teams, they conduct random patrols in city-owned, marked vehicles equipped with police radios and yellow security lights.
