Wealthy second hands draw thousands

Vail Valley consists of towns with a mixed community. You have your rich and wealthy, the common people, and the less well off. 20% of the residents of 16 and over work two jobs to make ends meet in a place where the average wage pulled in can be around US $2600 a month - with a one bedroom appartment costing over US $800 a month.
In it is this context that the annual rummage sale draws crowds numbering in the housands, some travelling 100 miles just to be there. The hand-me-downs from the rich are a welcome treat.
“Some of the things are insanely underpriced. The money up here is ridiculous. Some of this stuff is sold just because it is old,” said Kacee Picot, who got a Wedgewood cup and saucer for $25. Last year she picked up two silver tea sets for $10 each.
It takes more than 400 volunteers to run the sale which features a 50-cent room and towards the end of the sale a 50% markdown. Their is a small entry fee.
Eagle Valley High School wrestling team members collected the 50-cent entry fee this year from 3,000 people on Saturday. The money goes to 60 charity groups. In 2000, the sale made a record $189,000.
